Homework and Preschoolers

Homework and Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Bella Terra, preschool, daycare, childcare, learning academy

If your preschooler has been assigned homework, you can help your little one to engage playfully with the assignment and to have a positive experience too. Just remember that your preschooler learns best through play and this homework activity is yet another opportunity to have fun with your child!

Preschoolers and learning

Whether tying a pair of shoes or leaping in the air, young children learn primarily through the play process. Their earliest sensory experiences lead them to first play alone and then with others. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has identified play as a crucial part of the learning process for preschool-aged children. When children have positive experiences with play, they develop healthier, more positive attitudes toward learning in the future.

Homework and play

When your preschooler arrives home with an assignment from a teacher, think about ways you might be able to turn that simple activity into a play adventure the two of you can share!

Take a Musical Turn: Gear up for the assignment by marching around the living room and chanting an impromptu fight song at the top of your lungs. This playful start will help your little one to engage more fully with the homework. And don’t forget to celebrate its completion with a raucous whoop and victory dance!

Become an Artist: If allowable for the assignment, pull out fingerpaints or crayons, and use the colors of the rainbow to bring the activity to life. Encourage your preschooler to choose favorite colors, and then admire the finished work together!

Build in Breaks: Remember your preschooler thrives on play, so if the assignment takes more than a few minutes, build in breaks for physical activity. Even leap-frogging across the living room or jogging down the hall and back can help your preschooler to complete the assignment with greater focus and enjoyment!
